The event is now officially named the "Duke Medicine Tobacco Road Marathon."

"We are extremely pleased to have Duke Medicine join us in making Cary's first marathon a reality," said race organizer and five-time Boston Marathon veteran Kazem Yahyapour. "This relationship is particularly meaningful to me personally as I began running to regain my health after suffering a heart attack in 2002. Exercise is essential to taking responsibility for your health."

As a result of the agreement, Duke Medicine's name and logo will appear on the TRMA Web site and figure prominently on tee-shirts, awards and signage along the course. They will also have a prominent booth at the event's exposition hall at the Embassy Suites in Cary off Harrison-Oaks Boulevard.

The Duke Medicine Tobacco Road Marathon's scenic course includes 18 miles of the American Tobacco Trail (ATT). The ATT will also account for 7 miles of a half-marathon to be run simultaneously. Runners will start from the USA Baseball/Thomas Brooks Park complex in Cary at 7 a.m. TRMA believes they will deliver an ideal performance environment with a course largely devoid of hills and an average temperature for March 21 of 52 degrees Fahrenheit. Registration is moving at a brisk pace, but there are still slots available for both events.

"One of our key goals is to give runners the best opportunity possible to qualify for the Boston Marathon," says Yahyapour, who was co-founder of the successful City of Oaks Marathon. "We believe we have put together the fastest course in North Carolina."

TRMA is a group of highly experienced marathon runners and athletic event production managers headed by Yahyapour and Cid Cardoso Jr., president and founder of Inside-Out Sports. Plans call for proceeds to go to the Wounded Warriors Project and the Triangle Rails to Trails Conservancy (TRTC). Details about the event, including on-line registration and training tips, can be obtained through TRMA's Web site at www.tobaccoroadmarathon.com. You can also become a friend of "Tobacco Road" on Facebook.

SOURCE: Tobacco Road Marathon Association (TRMA) | CARY, N.C., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire

Marathon News: Marathon proves exercise for body and spirit from first finisher to last, thousands receive stellar support

All things considered, Diane Kassab had a blast running the 2010 Chevron Houston Marathon. So much so that her time might have suffered a bit.

“It was fun. The spirit is tremendous,” said Kassab, of Houston. “I danced to every band. That was probably my mistake.”

Officially, Kassab, 56, was the last runner to cross the finish line Sunday, her time clocked at 6 hours, 1 minute and 5 seconds.

“I'm disappointed, because last year I actually made 5:45,” she lamented before letting out a laugh. “Maybe this proves this should be my last marathon.”

More like a reason to look forward to next year's. After all, there is something to be said about the institution

That is the race, which is that, aside from being the largest sporting event in Houston, it might be the most special. Much like in years past, the 38th edition of the marathon and its accompanying races was full of personal victories, inspirational stories and acts of hospitality and kindness.
Raising the bar

The event began on a good note, boasting the largest field in its history — more than 26,000 registered participants, including nearly 9,000 for the main race. Aided by superb conditions — cool temperatures and clear skies — the elite runners proceeded to make it the fastest marathon in Houston history, smashing three course records.

Teshome Gelana of Ethopia, a last-minute entry and relative unknown, won the men's marathon in a record 2:07:37.

Five other men broke the 2:10 barrier, something no man had done in Houston until Deriba Merga's 2:07:52 last year.

“I'm still trying to get my head around it,” marathon race director Brant Kotch said.

Teyba Erkesso, also of Ethiopia, became the first woman to break the course record in consecutive years, posting a 2:23:53 to best her 2009 mark of 2:24:18.

American Shalane Flanagan, an Olympic bronze medalist in the 10,000 meters in Beijing, shattered the women's half marathon record, clocking in at 1:09:41.

Marathon organizers were ecstatic.

“We are managing each year to raise the bar a little,” race managing director Steven Karpas said. “We raised the bar a lot today.”

Most of the runners and wheelchair racers hit the streets for reasons other than money or competition. For many, it was a matter of personal fitness. For others, the chance to come through on a dare or promise. Still others did it in memory of a loved one or to benefit a cause close to the heart.

Mostly, though, the marathon gave them all a reason to celebrate life.

“It's a spiritual thing almost,” Kassab said. “It really is.”

Participants flocked downtown as early as 4 a.m. to prepare for the 7 a.m. start. The 26.2-mile route took them past portions of the Fifth Ward and the Heights, down Montrose, through West University to the Galleria, across Memorial Park, east on Allen Parkway and back to downtown.
They're with the band

Folks needed not run to be part of the action. Jason Killen, Brian Warwick and Andy Klueh, who form the rock band Days Drive, serenaded the runners at the corner of Montrose and Warrick — complete with amplifiers, speakers and a three-piece drum set.

“It's the least we can do when all these folks are out here training themselves to run as far as they can,” Killen said.

The scene was quieter — though no less warm — along tree-lined University Boulevard, which looked its best adorned with American flags.

Red Powerade bottle in hand, Chris Dobson of Houston stood alongside daughters Kirsten and Ainsley while waiting for her husband and their father, Monte, to pass by. Kirsten, 13, had a pair of backup sneakers at the ready should he need them. Ainsley, 10, sported a handwritten sign that read, “You look like lightning, Daddy.”
Fruit, anyone?

Two driveways down, the Reids were offering runners orange slices and banana halves.

“A few people need bananas right about now,” Taylor Reid said.

Some estimates put the number of spectators at 200,000, among them at least 5,000 volunteers. The runners — and their families and friends — appreciated the support.

“It says a lot about Houstonians,” Chris Dobson said. “These guys need the support; it's hard to run 26.2 miles.”

Said marathoner Brett Gotcher, who finished seventh, good for the best time by an American: “The people here, the officials, the crowds, everything — I feel like it's another home. I plan on coming back.”

As Kassab made her way to the finish line, organizers scrambled to find a medal to hand her. As it turned out, they had run out — at least on the spot — as more people than anticipated had finished, with Karpas noting at least a 20 percent increase from last year's total of 5,300.

All in all, not a bad problem to have.

“Those figures blow us away,” Karpas said. “To have that growth in one year is phenomenal.”

Kassab didn't mind one bit. Just finishing — and enjoying the support throughout — made her day.

“I had a blast,” Kassab said. “Let them know that.”

Source: BERNARDO FALLAS | http://www.chron.com

New Balance back in the running for Singapore Marathon

When the estimated 17,000 runners start off on their 42.1km marathon tomorrow, another chapter in the battle between running shoe brands for market supremacy will also take place.

Running brand New Balance is back in as a sponsor of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon, replacing adidas. Rivals adidas had replaced them as a sponsor in 2005 and subsequently went on to sponsor the next three editions.

It is a development that the New Balance team in Singapore is happy with.

“From the brand point of view it is actually a good run for us because the brand is about running. Running is in our blood and running is what we are good at,” said Mr Patrick Wong, the New Balance country representative.

“So to be part of the premier running event is something we have always wanted and it will push the profile of the brand up a little bit as compared to the last few years.”

As for previous sponsors, adidas – who still have the adidas Sundown Marathon on their calendar – their focus on running has taken on a different form.

“The decision [to pull out of the Singapore Marathon] has been largely due to a shift in terms of our Sports Marketing focus for the year,” said Janice Lee Fang, brand manager for adidas Singapore. “This year, for example, we launched a new brand specific initiative, our island-wide running community effort called the adiNation of Runners – a club which seeks to provide runners with a closer touch point with the brand.

“adidas has had an excellent relationship with the organizers of both events over the year and we’re confident that there will be opportunities for us to work together again in the future,” she added.

The foray of New Balance into the Singapore Marathon is meant to complement and not replace the REAL Run, the brand’s other sponsorship vehicle.

“We are not going to replace the REAL Run. REAL Run will always still be with us,” reassured Wong. “The marathon is more for the elite while the REAL Run is more for mass participation. This is not the end of our sponsorships. We do have some plans for next year.”

Although there are marathons in different parts of South East Asia, the Singapore sponsorship is not part of a regional plan, confirmed Wong.

“It’s not a regional plan. In different countries, the StanChart Marathon is owned by different organisations and so it’s quite hard for us to do a regional agreement. But we try to make sure we get the other countries involved as well. Unofficially, we are working with StanChart for most of the races,” added Wong.

New Balance remains a strong brand of choice for consumers, Wong confirmed.

“In terms of running, depending on how you look at it, we are probably the number one brand. In running, we are very strong on the male side. At most of the races, we do a shoe count, we are either first or number two,” said Wong. “We are weak in the female side because the shoe doesn’t look flattering on the female feet.”

In recent years, the retail scene has seen a proliferation of retail stores set up by Nike, adidas, Fila and Asics. Nike has 14 stores while adidas has four. New Balance too has made their presence felt with four retail stores.

The stores are a necessary part of the brand’s strategy to educate consumers, said Wong.

“Our retail shops are meant to show a complete picture of what the brand offers. The retailers have limited space and they have to cater to all the brands. To a certain extent, they can only present part of the range and so it’s not a true representation of the brand. And because they don’t sell much apparel, they don’t present the apparel story as well,” said Wong.

“In terms of education, in our stores we can afford to give a longer time for consultation. This is something that consumers are coming back to our shops for because we give proper consultation and advice. This is something that we can’t force the retailer to do. It’s dollars and cents and everybody understands that.

“But it’s good, because when we educate them, maybe they will subsequently go to the retailers shop to buy. To us, it’s left pocket, right pocket,” added Wong.

Wong acknowledged that regular retailers initially felt the brand was competing with them for business.

Said Wong: “In the beginning they did [treat our shops as competition], but after awhile they realised the advantage of having us because we do educate the consumers on shoes so that when they go to the retailers shop, they know exactly what to buy and that translates to less time for the retailers to convince them to buy. So that’s the good part.”

Despite the economic crisis earlier in the year, New Balance is doing well.

“I’m glad to say that the brand is doing well. We’ve exceeded our sales targets and so it’s a good year for us,” said Wong.

“Our sponsorships, our retail shops, our consultation, helps us to project a more professional image of the brand. So people do want to stay with the brand. We are an accountable brand, reasonably priced and we do make good shoes and so even in an economic crisis like this, people are still coming back to us,” said Wong.

“We are up from last year around 10% [in terms of market share] while the rest are either flat or declining. Basically we are gaining from others. In terms of market share for running, we are around 22%. Asics is around 20 to 22%. They are on par with us,” added Wong.

Source: Les Tan/Red Sports

RP triathletes advance to Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Florida

Part of New Balance’s global commitment to the sports is to support professional and everyday athletes. Students from many Washoe County schools were bussed in from their campuses and hundreds of parents and teachers and between 250 to 300 volunteers were on hand for the event, race director Eric Lerude said Monday.

Through the Education Alliance of Washoe County, the funds will benefit the Washoe County School District's Kids in Motion Program, which promotes and provides health and fitness programs at elementary schools where there are no formal fitness programs, and the Passport Program, which assists K-12 students who need additional assistance to help them meet educational goals.

"This event is vital to those programs, there's no doubt about it," said Lerude, who has directed the 5-year-old event the past two years. "This event has become very popular in this community, and it's obviously for a good cause."

The Kids in Motion program provides money to participating schools in the form of grants to help purchase fitness equipment, such as basketballs, soccer balls and jump ropes, fund field days, support running teams or provide formal physical education instruction.

The Passport Program helps fund tutoring, summer school and has helped nearly 2,000 students in the last four years.

Lerude said company sponsorships and other contributions this year raised about $125,000 for the two programs. Last year, the sponsor donations and registrations totaled approximately $188,000.

"We are still totaling the runner registration entry dollars," Lerude said "That number as of (Monday) is $30,000, but we are not finished processing checks. We'll have that part figured out within days."

Source: rgj.com (BY MICHAEL MARTINEZ • October 21, 2009)

At 75, George Hirsch Will Run New York City Once More

George Hirsch, a founder and publisher of running magazines, told his wife that he was retiring from marathons two years ago.

Old habits die hard.

George Hirsch is 75. He is the founding publisher of New York magazine, he ran for Congress in 1986, and he has a personal-best marathon time of 2 hours 38 minutes (Boston, 1979). A founder and publisher of running magazines, Hirsch helped Fred Lebow plan the first five-borough New York City Marathon, in 1976, and is now chairman of the New York Road Runners, the race’s organizer. He has run more than 30 marathons over four decades.

On Nov. 1, Hirsch plans to be at the starting line of the New York City Marathon on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. His friends are hoping for the best. Some of them also worry.

“The last few times George has raced marathons, he literally came out looking like a welterweight boxer who had been T.K.O.’d in the eighth round,” said Amby Burfoot, a longtime editor at Runner’s World.

At the Chicago Marathon in 2003, Hirsch, then 69, collapsed 50 yards from the finish and fell on his face. He lost part of two front teeth. At the Mesa Falls Marathon in Idaho in 2007, Hirsch, then 73, fell on his face again. His sunglasses smashed and he was left with a black eye.

Two months later, Hirsch was on pace to run a 3:27 marathon in Albany when he lost his balance running downhill after the 20th mile. He was bleeding, but he picked himself up and took off again. His back soon seized up. Two police officers on bicycles escorted him the rest of the way. He refused their requeststo go to a hospital.

Bart Yasso, who has run more than 1,000 races, described Hirsch as the “most mentally tough runner I have ever met.” But in Albany, Hirsch’s wife, Shay, watched her bloodied husband shuffle into the finishers’ gate and decided they should talk.

“I said, ‘This has got to be it, George,’ ” she said. “ ‘You’ve run your marathons. You’ve put it out there and you know what you can do, but this is not good.’ ”

Hirsch is not the only septuagenarian who has found it difficult to give up marathoning. Ed Whitlock, a Canadian athlete, was 73 when he ran a 2:54 marathon; this month, at 78, he ran a 1:37 half-marathon. Last year, 174 finishers of the New York City Marathon were 70 or older, and 15 were in their 80s.

Hirsch, razor thin with a warm smile, had always longed to be good at some athletic endeavor. “I had no natural gifts,” he said.

Growing up in New Rochelle, N.Y., he set up a high-jump pit in his parents’ backyard and spent hours trying to clear the bar, even though “there isn’t a single high-jump gene in there,” Shay Hirsch said. In his 30s, he took up distance running — a sport in which “you can improve a lot just on persistence,” Hirsch said.

His grit served him as well in life as in running. Hirsch built The Runner and Runner’s World into popular magazines that conveyed his enthusiasm and broadened the sport’s appeal. Then, in 1988, Hirsch was working at an exposition for the New Jersey Waterfront Marathon when he met Shay Scrivner, then 40, a brunette with kind eyes.

Hirsch asked her to dinner that night, but she refused. He was so taken with her, however, that he showed up at the starting line the next day — for a race that he never intended to run. He surveyed the crowd but still had not found her when the gun went off.

“I waited for every person to cross the starting line,” Hirsch said. “And then I started to jog. I kept looking left and right, and looking and running and jogging and looking, and at five miles, there she was up ahead of me. I came up next to her and said, ‘Hi, how are you?’ She said, ‘What are you doing here?’ And I said, ‘Looking for you.’ ”

They ran the remaining 21 miles together and shared their life stories, including their failed first marriages, and wed the next year.

Hirsch loves his wife more than running, so when she suggested after the Albany race that it was time to stop doing marathons, he agreed. He even seemed relieved. He e-mailed his close friends, including the four-time Boston and New York City winner Bill Rodgers and the Olympic champions Frank Shorter and Joan Benoit Samuelson.

“I’m retiring from marathoning,” he wrote. “Yes, this time for good. I really do mean it.”

Mary Wittenberg, the president and chief executive of New York Road Runners, remembered receiving that message. “I never accepted or believed that resignation,” she said.

In early August, Hirsch went for a long run and made it 17 miles. He began to see some significance in numbers. It was the year of his 20th wedding anniversary and the 40th running of the New York City Marathon, which he last ran in 1994. As he took longer runs, Shay asked, “Are you training for anything in particular?” He kept saying no.

In September, though, Hirsch told her that he wanted to run one last marathon in New York. She agreed.

Hirsch intended to run only part of the Chicago Marathon this month as his final long training run. He told friends he would go no farther than 20 miles. At Mile 20, he felt good and decided to jog in the last six miles. He finished in 3:58 without injury.

Hirsch’s friends have mobilized to help him through the finish line in New York. Germán Silva, the 1994 and ’95 winner, will run the early miles with Hirsch. Rodgers, who is fighting plantar fasciitis, will run the last few miles with him.

Shorter, the 1972 Olympic champion, said he received a cortisone shot in his damaged left hip so he could join Hirsch and Rodgers. But he realized last week that he would not be healthy enough.

“George is whipping Frank and me,” said Rodgers, who has been friends with Hirsch since 1976. “We’re 15 years younger than him. We’re struggling a little.”

Shay Hirsch will be waiting at the finish. Her husband is running for a charity that benefits research into multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer that she is battling. When she was recovering from a stem-cell transplant three years ago, he rarely left her bedside for months.

“He is very tenacious,” she said. “He doesn’t give up on people, either.”

Source: nytimes

New Balance slides into snowboarding (Introducing 686 Times New Balance)

New Balance Athletic Shoe is jumping into action sports with the launch of a snowboarding line.

The Boston company known primarily for its running shoes has partnered with California snowboarding brand 686 on the “686 Times New Balance” collection of snowboard boots, sneakers, jackets and T-shirts.

SHOE-IN: The 580 Times New Balance Snowboard Boot sells for about $300.

New Balance will debut the collection locally tomorrow night at the Concepts sneaker store in Cambridge’s Harvard Square.

The partnership with 686, a company owned and operated by snowboard riders, allows New Balance to “add freshness” to one of its classic sneakers and introduce it to a new sport, according to product manager Jen Lynch.

The collection’s footwear includes two adaptations of New Balance’s 580 trail-running sneaker introduced in the mid-1990s.

The 580 Times New Balance Snowboard Boot, which retails for $300, incorporates New Balance’s patented Rollbar stability and Abzorb cushioning technology and other features typical of snowboarding boots.

“The outcome is that you get this really high-tech boot that fits and feels like a sneaker,” Lynch said.

New Balance also has customized a 580 sneaker for the collection using leather and yarn-dyed plaid panels. The three deaths occurred within 16 minutes of each other, a stunning rarity for marathon running. At ages 26, 36 and 65, all three men were reported to be in excellent health and properly trained to tackle the long distance.

Deaths during distance events are not the norm; Dr. William Roberts of the University of Minnesota says that people are more likely to be struck by lightning golfing! In fact, only 1 in 200,000 people die on average during exercise, and the fitter you are, the lesser the chance. The deaths this weekend seem to be related to freak cardiac arrest as all men had no problematic medical history and must have had some unknown and untreated heart problem. The 65 year old man reportedly collapsed around the 11 or 12 mile mark, hitting his head on the pavement and succumbing to the suffered blow. The 26 and 36 year old runners died at the hospital after collapsing, but autopsies are scheduled to uncover more detailed information.

This weekend's Detroit Marathon had ideal long distance running weather and the air quality in the city was not at any sort of elevated level. The three deaths seem more disturbing as in recent weeks other marathon-related deaths have occurred: two people died at the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Jose, CA and a Boston man died at the Baltimore Marathon.

These deaths should not deter runners from racing hard, long distances. When training for a marathon, make sure to build up your total mileage tolerance and ensure your body is ready to cover the distance. About 50 to 70 miles a week is adequate for more serious recreational runners, and including speed work and core training is a beneficial way to prepare your bones for the beating.

Proper nutrition and especially adequate hydration is essential for completing a marathon successfully. The color of your urine post-run will let you know your hydration levels: the darker the urine, the more you need to drink. You can also weigh yourself before and after you run to see how much water weight you lost. Try not to overhydrate, but make sure to replace the lost liquids with water and electrolyte drinks such as Gatorade. Pre-race, don't drink or do anything that could promote dehydration: consume excess caffeine, alcohol or soak in a hot tub. Eat plenty of calcium-rich foods during training and take a multi-vitamin and vitamin D plus calcium supplement to ensure bone health.

A great way to build up your heat tolerance is to do some of your runs-- especially faster tempo runs-- on a treadmill. Treadmills are a great way to teach your body how to handle the heat and cool down with natural sweat regulation. Most importantly, do not ignore any warning signs--heartburn, chest tightness, arm tightness-- no matter how insignificant they may seem.

Three die at the 2009 Detroit Marathon

Source: Examiner.com

New Balance Maintains Significant Domestic Footwear Production

BOSTON—New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc. is unique in the footwear industry.

Shoe businesses began downsizing in the U.S. more than a decade ago. New Balance expanded.

Its competitors fled from the U.S. in search of cheaper manufacturing offshore. New Balance continued to build its base in America.

Why? “We made our first pair of running shoes in 1938 and have never wavered in our commitment to domestic manufacturing,” said Rob DeMartini, CEO of the Boston-based manufacturer.

“Our New Bal- ance associates have pro¼ven that high-quality athletic foot¼wear can be produced com¼pet¼i¼tively in A¼merica.”

The company, which also produces athletic ac- cessories and apparel, prides itself on being the only domestic manufacturer of athletic foot-wear in the U.S.

About a quarter of the firm’s athletic footwear production is made or assembled each year at its plants in Boston; Lawrence, Mass.; and Norway, Norridgewock and Skowhegan, Maine, a company spokeswoman said.

New Balance also operates a manufacturing facility in Flimby, England. It does have supplier/partners in China and Vietnam that make products for the company, she said, but the firm’s manufacturing base has always been in the U.S.

Building U.S. presence

Despite the poor economy, Boston-headquartered New Ba-lance continues to build its base in America, where it has about 2,600 employees.

The firm’s most recent expansion came in September 2008 when it opened a 3,000-sq.-ft. facility, called Sports Research Lab, at its Lawrence manufacturing complex.

The laboratory’s goal is to design and develop new products and innovations “through the study of athletes, biomechanics and sport,” according to Edith Harmon, vice president of advanced products for New Balance.

It houses state-of-the-art biomechanics equipment, office space, a 120-foot running track, a 30-foot by 30-foot court, a smash lab and a variety of equipment used for testing.

The 103-year-old firm has consistently gained ground in the marketplace because it follows the same principles it was founded upon: superior customer service, a commitment to domestic manufacturing and leadership in technological innovation, the company said. It also prides itself in the lean manufacturing techniques it uses to keep prices down.

Much of the credit for the success of New Balance’s five-plant U.S. operation goes to the company’s employees, who are committed to their work and the products the company manufactures, DeMartini said.

New Balance recently came out with an online documentary as part of an awareness campaign that highlights the craftsmanship of its domestic manufacturing work force.

“During this tough economic time, we are proud to showcase the powerful unity of our American work force and their local community,” DeMartini said. “This documentary highlights Skowhegan as our first Maine factory, but tells the success story of all New Balance manufacturing facilities and associates.”

It can be viewed on the firm’s Web site at www.newbalance.com/USA.

However, the firm’s focus on building a strong U.S. base hasn’t prevented New Balance from growing globally during the last decade. The privately held company, which had global sales of about $1.64 billion in 2008, has expanded its international footprint regularly during that span, the spokeswoman said, with about 4,000 employees now operating in more than 120 countries.

It has wholly owned subsidiaries in Australia, New Zealand, the United King- dom, Germany, Sweden, Hong Kong, Singapore, France, Mexico, Canada, Japan, Brazil and South Africa, making it one of the largest athletic footwear and apparel businesses in the world.

Humble beginnings

That’s quite a leap from the tiny business that William J. Riley, a 33-year-old English immigrant, launched in 1906 as New Balance Arch Co. It initially produced arch supports and prescription footwear for customers with problem feet. After operating out of his home for three years, Riley opened his first office as the firm slowly grew.

New Balance, with annual sales in the $20,000 range at the time, incorporated in 1931 and rented space at a door factory in Cambridge, Mass. But in the midst of the Great Depression, sales plummeted almost 75 percent.

In need of capital, Riley’s top salesman, Arthur Hall, became his partner, and the business survived as other footwear makers toppled. Riley designed and made the first New Balance running shoe in 1938, and by 1941 the company was designing and manufacturing custom sports shoes for running, baseball, basketball, tennis and boxing.

Riley and Hill sold the business in 1953 to Hill’s daughter and son-in-law, Eleanor and Paul Kidd, who brought new ideas and more energy to the firm.

They changed its name to New Balance Orthopedic Laboratory in 1956 and introduced the Trackster, the world’s first performance running shoe made in multiple widths, in 1960.

In 1970, the company became New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc., with annual sales of $100,000.

During the Boston Marathon in 1972, New Balance’s current owner, Jim Davis, purchased the business from the Kidds. Under his leadership, the firm expanded throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, both at home and abroad.

Davis and his wife Anne played key roles in turning the company into a billion-dollar operation with a long global reach during the last 37 years.

Expansions included: a manufacturing facility in Ireland; the production sites in Maine and Massachusetts; relocating the factory in Ireland to a bigger plant in England; and numerous acquisitions in the last decade.

By 2000, the company reached the $1 billion sales mark and has continued to grow since then.

Through it all, New Balance has never strayed from its roots with good reason, DeMartini said. “Our associates have passion and pride in their craftsmanship, and their dedication to their work is why we are able to withstand economic challenges and remain strong.”

source: By Mike McNulty Rubber & The New Balance 1063 caught my attention this year when it was awarded as the Best Update by Runner's World Magazine. I have used New Balance before and the new updates made me curious on why the shoe received this distinction.

Here is what Runner's World had to say:

"The wide fit and firm feel that characterized New Balance shoes are things of the past, as this update makes abundantly clear. As with the 769, the 1063 is built around a new last that has less volume in the forefoot and is snug through the arch."

The NB1063 has the common features from my other New Balance Shoes: the N-Lock lacing, Abzorb cushioning, Ndurance rubber outsole and the Stability Web.

NLOCK Lacing System gives a custom fit.

For the improved features, NB1063 has updated the Abzorb cushioning system for a more cushioned and comfortable ride. This is one of the shoe that features the latest PL-1 last of New Balance. In simple terms, the last is how the shoe's upper is attached to its midsole. With the PL-1, New Balance promises reduce toe box volume and better anatomical heel fit. Finally, it has the Cocona Phantom Liner inside the shoe that wicks away moisture and reduce odor. And I though the Cocona is only for their running shirts and shorts.

After 20K

I immediately took these shoes for a run. So far, I had a total of 20K mileage on the shoe after using it 3 times. Here is my review.

Pros

Very soft feel. As they described it, the New Balance 1063 provided a soft ride. The pads inside the shoes are really comfortable and the shoe cushioning made my runs smooth and easy.

Great Fit. The N-Lock system keeps the foot in place for long runs. The wide fit at the toes was just right. Not too roomy as the previous ones.

High Visibility. Reflective materials are all over. Great shoe for running at night or very early in the morning.

Pogi points. This is one of the good looking shoes out there. When I first saw the pictures in the magazine, it was like love at first sight for me. Very interesting design and form. They come in red, yellow and blue colors.

NB Absorb technology gives you that smooth ride for your runs.

Cons

Heavy. They say that the 1063 is lighter and less bulky but after using the latest lightweight shoes from other brands, I can tell that this one is pretty heavy and it was noticable. Even heavier than my previous NB trainers.

Hard plastic. I really wonder why it is only New Balance that is fond of putting a plastic or rubber material at the tongue. Twice, I got chafing on my foot since this material keeps on rubbing on my skin. That is why I don't put the laces up to the last hole when I use my NBs.

This material on the tongue of NB shoes gets me into trouble.

Summary
Overall, these trainers will be good for my very long runs. It will remain as a trainer and I doubt if I would wear them on a race especially if I am aiming for a PR. But its cushioning feels great and will be good for a full marathon. They make me feel protected if I plan to run the whole 42K.

The New Balance 1063 is recommended for normal to high-arched runners. Heavy runners will also benefit from the shoe's cushioning. I think they are great when training for long distance races like a 21K or a 42K.

Where to buy
New Balance 1063 is available in New Balance outlets and in most sports shops and running stores.

Price: 5,795 Php

New Balance 1063

Forest Grove runners perform well at New Balance Invite

Forest Grove’s cross country teams were in mid-season form last Saturday, running to a pair of Top 10 finishes at the New Balance Festival of Champions.

The Forest Grove boys finished seventh in the large school division, netting 124 points under the meet’s convoluted scoring system. The Lady Vikings finished ninth among large schools, picking up 195 points.

Josh Johnson gave the Viking boys a huge boost by winning Flight 1 — the event was broken into four different races with each team’s No. 1 and 2 runners in Flight 5, No. 3 and 4 in Flight 4, No. 5 and 6 in Flight 3 and No. 7-12 in Flight 1.

Johnson won the Flight 1 race with a lifetime best of 17:12.7 and teammate Tyler Shipley finished 11th in 18:08.6. That gave the Vikings a big point boost from the bottom of their lineup and the veterans did the rest. Forest Grove got four Top 25 performances from their top six runners, including a 14th-place finish in Flight 5 by Nick Robbins (16:48.6) and an 11th-place finish by James Myers (17:17.5) in Flight 4.

Forest Grove’s girls got their best finishes from their top two runners. Eredi Pintor finished ninth (20:14.7) in Flight 5 and Laura Matzke was 18th (20:35.8). Tiffany Blackmun also impressed with a lifetime best of 22:22.2, good for 18th in Flight 3.

Sources: Zack Palmer The Forest Grove News-Times, Sep 23, 2009, Updated Sep 23, 2009

Protect Your Feet With Quality Shoes, Not Nike Shox

By Chris Shearman, appeared in tigerweekly.com

Many people go into a shoe store looking for running shoes and buy the shoes that they think are cute or that look cool. And many novice runners believe that if a shoe is over $80 it must be a pretty good shoe. Perhaps the biggest gimmick in all of these misconceptions is the Nike Shox.

When running around the LSU lakes it is likely to see at least half of the people wearing these shoes. Without mentioning any of the statistics, reviews and truths, it should be known that these shoes are not just bad for feet during running, they are bad for feet in general.

There are very specific aspects that make up a good running shoe. Possibly the most important of which is that a running shoe should train the runner to run on the balls of the feet. This is done by producing a shoe that has just as much cushion on the front as in the back, therefore promoting the shift of the impact from the heels to the balls of the feet.

This simple technology has been utilized by many old school running brands. When browsing at the local shoe stores, take a look at the actual design and mechanics of the shoe. A shoe made by Brooks, Asics, or the upper level New Balance will have almost equal cushioning on the bottom throughout the shoe.

Runners World, who has been the number one source of quality and breakthrough information about running for years, has a shoe guide on their website. The shoes mentioned there are Asics, Brooks, and the upper priced New Balance. In the runner's world, Nike Shox are a joke. Whether at Happy's Running Club or the Reindeer Run, both of these races are laid back and even then the appearance of Nike Shox will not be on the feet of someone in the front of the pack, if at all.

Perhaps the most obvious flaw in the Shox is the fact that there are gaps in the shoe; the elusive Air technology. Though Nike markets this as the genius of the shoe, it is absolutely absurd have air where support could be. That is the equivalent of taking the sole of a shoe, cutting a piece of it out, and then convincing runners that it is a better shoe.

Though young people might think the Shox are like the shocks on a car and will give them more spring, it is actually a shoe that contradicts the necessary technology to support an injury-free runner.

LSU students and runners alike can receive similar information at local running stores. Usually these stores employ people who have some experience with running and will never offer you Nike Shox for your ideal trainer shoe. Do a favor and convert all Nike Shox into rainy day school shoes.

If My 'Lola' Can Do It, You Can Do It, Too!

MOMMY TALK By Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan
(The Philippine Star) Updated September 29, 2009 12:00 AM

Since I started making reasons for working out and stopped making excuses on why I should not be active, I have been able to make fitness a part of my lifestyle habit. I must have had this fitness bug in my genes because even my 86-year-old grandmother has been fit all her life. She walks at least two kilometers a day for as long as I can remember. She joined the MommyMilkshake Marathon and the Enervon Memorace at the Fort and won as the oldest finisher. How’s that for a woman who’s in her late 80s? And mind you, she’s just getting started!

She is looking forward to joining more fun runs especially if it’s for a good cause because she finds the races a great way to get together with people and get her grandchildren to walk/jog with her to the finish line. We take turns accompanying her while she talks to us. It’s a great way to get her mind working and her body functioning, which allows her not to mind the distance she’s walking. My Mamang also enjoys bringing home the goody bags and sharing them with her family.

She’s had a different glow lately and has also become more concerned with her comfort while doing her exercise. Good thing she won a nice pair of New Balance running shoes because she had asked for one before the Enervon Memorace. She’s since gone shopping for running outfits as well. Wow, I just can’t get over the fact that my Mamang is living life to the fullest at this time. People say that the second half of their lives is the best half of their lives. In this case, my grandmother is already in the third half of her life and still having a blast.

After posting my grandmother’s photos on Facebook, so many people were inspired by her finishing three-kilometer races. So many people I know have made a choice to get started with their exercise regimen upon realizing that it’s never too late to take that first step to fitness. If my lola can do it, so can they!

So, if you are reading this and you haven’t yet fulfilled your New Year’s resolution to diet and exercise, I urge you to do it now. Just do it! I promise you’ll see life in a brighter perspective just like my grandmother.

Most Wanted: Running Gears For The Marathon and Beyond

You may or may not be running a 26-mile race soon, but you’re still taking your fitness seriously this fall—which means having the right gear for running in the crisp, leaf-crunching weather. There’s another reason this is a great season to step into new footwear and running apparel—running gear is hitting a stylish and high-tech stride that enhances what has historically been a primarily functional role. Frankly, we’re finding these new runner’s duds inspirational. Editors-who-run John Dugan and Liz Plosser have selected some personal favorites from this season’s offerings of running shoes and apparel—just in time for this year’s Chicago Marathon or your pre-Thanksgiving training push. One warning: Once you’re wearing running a kit this cool, you’ve got no excuses. Meet you on the trail.

SHOES

Nike Lunar Glide+ shoes, $100 (men’s and women’s) available at Niketown (669 N Michigan)
Nike’s latest, greatest sneaker eliminates the ubiquitous runner’s quandary of having to choose between stability and cushioning by providing both in one shoe. (Bonus points for the sweet design and colorways.) The snugly fit (more slipper than sneaker) and soft (but not too soft) sole makes for a cushy ride. But lest you think you’re going to plod slowly away atop pillows, the feather-light sneaks (the women’s are a mere 8.6 ounces) make you feel like you’ve got rockets on your feet. Seeee ya!

New Balance 905 shoes, $94.95 at nbwebexpress.com
This year, New Balance 1063s turned around my running game—somehow their design gives support to my oddly shaped giant boats and has put some spring in my morning jog. I quit my gym, I lost weight—those shoes are that rad. I’m thinking of stepping up to a racing shoe (maybe even racing again) and number one on my list is the “premium lightweight stability trainer,” the New Balance 905, which can be used for both training and racing debuting in January 2010. On the techy side, these are designed to hug the foot with a custom-like fit, control moisture and reflect 360º for safety. The New Balance 905 has a brighter, more aggressive look—which I’m digging—and marks a shift for New Balance away from fairly humdrum running shoe colors of the past. These babies pop.

adiStar Ride 2, $125 at shopadidas.com
The new elite running shoe from adidas has yet to hit the streets, but its talking-point attraction is a new technology allowing the shoe to flex more naturally with your movement. But hang on because there’s a half dozen bells and whistles humbly at work in these shorts. First, the X-Static fabric is: antimicrobial (no yucky sweat germs), eliminates odor (no nose-pinching, post-run stink), regulates temperature (perfect for an Indian summer day or steamy treadmill session), eliminates static (no lame short bunching). Then, there’s the subtle storage compartment—on the front of the shorts so you never again have to man-handle your butt as you try to grab that fiver out of the pocket for a post-run cup of coffee. Finally, the sewn-in, customizable “In Case Of Emergency” tag. Yeah, you’ll probably never need it, but it’s nice to know NB is thinking of everything, isn’t it?

Nike Pacer Women’s Low Rise Running Capris, $50 available at Niketown
Yeah, it’s just a pair of black capris, but considering they’re a staple of any runner’s wardrobe come the crisp days of October, they’d better be comfy. And cute. Nike nails both of these crucial elements with the new Pacer. Dri-FIT fabric wicks sweat, flat seams minimize chafing, the low-rise waist is super flattering, mesh hems add some style, a back zip pocket stores your cash and ID, and a media-player pocket makes it a cinch to take your tunes on the road. Ladies, you will live in these suckers!

Nike Dri-Fit Tempo Track Two-in-One Men’s Running Shorts, $50 available at Niketown
Regularly jogging men, if you are still running in sweats or basketball shorts, I have news for you—there’s a better way—a much better way. No tight, body-hugging lycra, no weird cutouts exposing skin, no rough seams that chafe and scratch. Just a straightforward, cotton-feel that belies the intense technical fabrics in action (hydrophobic polyester yarns move moisture to keep you dry). The mellow lavender hue just adds to the experience. So you have it both ways in this tank—read your newspaper or run in it. While some companies like Nike and Reebok have a bit of the market share, New Balance is definitely the king here. There are good reasons for this as well. All of New Balance's products are made in the USA. This is a huge selling feature when you consider the fact that Nike and other companies outsource all their labor to offshore locations. So what is it that makes the 811's so great? It's all in the technology. There are two great pieces of technology in these shoes that other companies have been unable to replicate.

The first unique feature inside these shoes is what New Balance 811 calls the ROLLBAR Support System. You know how a roll bar in a SUV or pickup works? New Balance took this concept and applied to shoes to prevent runners and walkers from rolling their ankles. What you end up with is an extremely comfortable shoe that offers a ton of support for the lower leg. This prevent injuries and also allows for a more comfortable walking experience.

The second bit of technology in the New Balance 811's is Walking Strike Path. This was developed because many walkers have bad habits. New walkers, in particular, fail to establish proper walking technique and are more susceptible to injury because of it. The Walking Strike Path corrects gait and encourage solid walking techniques. This builds the right muscles and also decreases soreness in the walker.

New Balance 843 Walking Shoes Review

The New Balance 843 is a high end performance walking shoe featuring ABZORB® and ROLLBAR®. That's the case with the 1023. New Balance reworked the upper pattern so the stitching won't cause any blister-inducing pressure on the forefoot, and the midsole is slightly lighter, but not so much that anyone will notice.

Recommended for: Efficient runners, and forefoot or midfoot-strikers with normal or high arches who want a cushioned, light ride.
Bottom line: The 1023 isn't a significant upgrade, but didn't need to be. My only complaint is it lacks heel cushioning." -Kristin Reves/San Diego "The 1023 works well for me on all surfaces and has good cushioning and support." -Robert Mcmasters/East Lansing "Nice shoe. I wore the 1022 as my primary shoe, and the 1023 is just as good." -Linda Pulver/East Lansing

Other's Review:

The 1022 was the best running shoe I have ever owned. I have checked into a lot of shoe brands, and each offers a number of benefits as well as a claim to be the best. Then, of course, there are the numerous celebrity and athlete endorsers that preach the benefits of every shoe out there. There is, though, one brand of shoe you should consider on the merits of its engineering design and fit: New Balance Shoes. The engineering and technology that goes into the shoes produced by New Balance makes them worth a second look, but it isn’t like you would even need a second look.

New Balance shoes are comfortable athletic shoes with an emphasis placed on walking shoes. They are often recommended by podiatrists, but carry no endorsements. New Balance Shoes have an “endorsed by no one” policy. They would rather let their technology and feel act as the sales points for their shoes rather than a celebrity or athlete. They feel that you will know just how good their shoes are by taking a look at the reviews and listening to the feedback by word of mouth. Check out a customer review on any website or in any magazine and it will become apparent that New Balance shoes are the way to go. Also, by not paying celebrity or athlete endorsers, they save enough money that you will find their shoes very reasonably priced for the high level of performance and comfort you will get.

New Balance shoes are also available in several different styles, and each is specially designed by the company’s engineers to fulfill a specific need. There are shoes for motion control, extra support, and off road running to name just a few of the many. New Balance shoes also come as specific sports shoes, like basketball shoes and cross trainers for both men and women. Additionally, New Balance shoes come in a children’s shoe line that is very highly regarded as well.

Almost as important as the style available from New Balance shoes are the variety of sizes available. New Balance sheos are available for purchase in extended widths. That is an important feature, because you know that if you have wide feet you often have to order special custom shoes to meet your needs. New Balance just goes ahead and produces those shoes on a more mainstream basis so they are easier to find.

When you look for new shoes, functionality, comfort, and price are likely all factors in your decision. That is why you should at least consider New Balance shoes for your feet. They are offered in a number of style and with varying features for whatever you need out of an athletic shoe. New Balance shoes are also not endorsed by any highly paid celebrities or athletes, so they can afford to sell their shoes at a lower price. Finally, they are offered in extended widths if you are in need of such accommodations in a shoe. NO matter what the reason, you should certainly at least consider New Balance shoes for your next pair of sneakers.

This Article was shared by Christopher Luck.

The New Balance 991 Running Shoes For Women

New Balance makes a full line of running shoes for both men and women. One of their most popular running shoes for women is the 991. It has become an industry standard to the point where all running shoes are kind of starting to look like it! There are several things that make the 991 better than these imitation brands though. In the following text, we'll outline a few of these reasons.

First and foremost, the New Balance 991's are made in the USA. This is actually true of all of this company's products, but it's definitely worth mentioning. So many companies in this industry (Nike comes to mind first) outsource all their shoe making labor to the third world. This saves these companies a ton of money because the cost of living is so much lower in these countries. Unfortunately, it also means that shoes aren't of great quality. Stick to products made in America. They'll last longer and you'll run with less guilt on your conscious.

Another thing that makes the 991 running shoes for women stick out is the technology in this shoe. Only New Balance offers great features like lighting dry technology and a stability web. These features make sure that the shoe remains light, even when wet and also offers the heel extra support. This, in turn, prevent ankle and even knee injuries.

The last thing I'll mention about these shoes is you don't have to be a runner to benefit from them. If you do a lot of walking, try the 991's. The support and comfort that they offer is much better than similar shoes. They're even good for standing. If you've ever spent an entire day standing up, you know how important a good pair of shoes are.

Source: He says he has completed the most difficult parts of his trek, including mountains of the West and horribly hot pavement in Arizona and Nevada that caused blisters on the tops of his feet (his calluses protect the bottoms of his feet).

He said his 15,000-calorie diet full of pasta, beans, eggs, fruits and vegetables (“Meat makes you tired.”) helps fuel him, but that’s not all that energizes him. He said he will resume eating meat when he concludes the journey, to help restore tissues.

“Eighty-five percent is your mind,” says Baluchi, a U.S. citizen who was born in Iran.

Also compelling him to run nearly three marathons per day is his charity drive for the Unicef United States Fund. He is trying to raise $1 million this year while also working to break the record of 46 days for the journey. On Friday, he felt like he might be able to make it to New York City in 43 days, but he’d settle for 45 and a chance to meet President Barack Obama.

Since the other record has been tough to beat, he guesses if he sets his record, “Nobody can do it. I’m sometimes running all night,” he said.

He is sponsored by , and he’s doing them proud — even if he does immediately cut a hole in each new left shoe to ease pressure on his left, little toe. He runs against traffic and has discovered the crown of the highways puts extra weight on his left foot. When he cuts the hole, it eases strain on his knee.

“You run enough, you try things,” he said.

He’s getting support from several parties, including a doctor in the Non-Profit Chiropractic Organization who pays for food, fuel for a recreational vehicle and truck and more. He also benefits from occasional chiropractic adjustments and massages daily.
He said he has enjoyed meeting people and seeing the country while carrying a U.S. flag as well as toting a folded flag protected in a plastic case for delivery to New York.

He also has enjoyed some company on the trek. Friday, Davenport, Iowa chiropractic student Gabe Ellis ran along with him to experience part of the journey on U.S. 6, then north to U.S. 52 in Waltham Township and over to Chicago. And previously, a lost or stray dog that startled him, gnawed on his arm and leapt on his back later accompanied him for two days and a night before someone retrieved the retriever.

Next year he plans to start a five-year journey around the world, through 90 countries, raising funds for a charity in each nation. He said a crew for Discovery Channel will follow the journey, including his crossing of oceans in a pedal-powered watercraft he designed.

New Balance Woos the Sneakerheads

In an attempt to solidify its standing with influential sneaker bloggers, New Balance Lifestyle has launched a campaign around a limited release—just 480—of the company's 574 Clips running shoe.

The campaign, the first from Mother since winning the New Balance Lifestyle account last August (BBDO, New York, handles the brand's other work), includes a Polaroid in each of the 480 shoes with a 5-digit code on the back that buyers can use to "claim" their shoe online. The individual attention is meant to underscore the unusual, all-American lineage of the shoes: Each are composed of leftover material clippings in New Balance's Lawrence, Mass., factory, (hence "Clips.")

The 574 Clips will sell for $75, so the goal is not so much related to revenues from the line, but to creating a positive buzz among sneaker bloggers or "sneakerheads" as they're known in the industry. "They're vastly important for us because of the influence they have over the broader marketplace," said Taylor Duffy, integrated marketing manager for New Balance's Lifestyle. Duffy said that such sneakerheads have become much more influential over the past three years or so.

One of the industry's biggest sneakerheads, Matt Halfhill, founder of the NiceKicks.com, which gets 2 million hits a month, said that there's a ruboff effect among consumers when hardcore fans like himself give a sneaker the nod. "I think we are tastemakers at times," he said. "What we say might catch on. Sometimes people look to the blogs for opinion about the shoe and read the comments closely."

Only a sneakerhead is likely to fully appreciate Mother's campaign, which invites buyers of the shoes to go to a 574 Clips Web site where they can find the video clip of their shoe and then claim it by entering a 5-digit code on the back of a Polaroid that comes with their shoe. Afterwards, that consumer is invited to share that information with friends via Tumblr, MySpace, Delicious and Facebook links. The clips shoes doing things like riding a roller coaster or even being chased by a zebra.

The viral media component is designed to let the buzz linger long after the shoes have sold out, said Kristina Helb, a New Balance Lifestyle rep.
New Balance began repositioning its Lifestyle category about a year ago. The idea, similar to Adidas' Originals line, was to recycle New Balance's older running shoes, which have become hip in certain circles. After Mother was brought on board last year, the agency launched a research project called "The Mother Study," that identified New Balance's brand essence and its audience, including those influential bloggers.

Source: Todd Wasserman

Running Almost Barefoot

By Gaia Remerowski on September 4, 2009 10:26 AM

When WGBH, NOVA's parent PBS company moved locations, our new home (in Brighton, MA) just happened to be next to the offices of the New Balance shoe company. And they just happen to have a store in the building adjacent to ours. So whenever I pass the store, it often brings running to mind.

Which leads me to my current post - Not too long ago I bought a pair of running shoes. They are quite snazzy - with powder blue trim and futuristic looking mesh over the toes. But they don't come close to some other running shoes I recently came across - the Vibram FiveFingers. A cross between a gorilla's foot and a waterproof slipper, the shoes are meant to mimic the act of running barefoot. Check out a demo video from Wired:

Sounds a little strange, but there is some science to back up the idea that running without shoes could actually prevent more injuries than it sounds like it would cause.
Barely more than a rubber sole and thin material that wraps around each individual toe, the shoes fit like a glove would - on your foot. They are called Five'Fingers' because of a 'lost in translation' moment. Vibram is an Italian company and the Italians' have the same word for fingers as toes. When the name was translated as Five Fingers, American marketers thought it sounded cool and it stuck.

So why run barefoot (or as close as possible to barefoot)? It turns out those snazzy running shoes I bought prevent my feet from truly feeling the ground and that makes my foot hit that ground in an unnatural way. The heel in running shoes is very built up to cushion us from the impact of running. Since our heels are so well-protected, we tend to hit the ground heel first. But a shoe can only absorb so much impact and your leg absorbs the rest, which can lead to injury.

When you run barefoot, your natural tendency is to hit the ground towards the middle of your foot - around the arch area. Your arch acts like a spring by flattening out as you hit the ground to absorb the impact and then rebounding as you push back off the ground.
Basically by running barefoot, you're running the way nature intended. And if you wear Vibram FiveFingers on your runs, if nothing else, you'll certainly turn some heads as you fly by in these crazy looking shoes.
